Guided Tours

The Geology Museum is a popular tour destination on the University of Wisconsin Madison campus. Tours are approximately one hour long and feature hundreds of rock and mineral specimens, a black light mineral display, many Wisconsin fossils, and dinosaur bones. Admission to the museum is free, but for our guided tours we have a fee of $3 per person.

We are currently scheduling guided tours for 2022, with some limitations. Through May, 2022 guided tours are available:

  • For middle school grades or older (Groups with younger students can schedule self-guided visits – see below)
  • To groups with 25 people or less
  • On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays through the spring

If you are interested in scheduling a guided group tour, please email tours@geology.wisc.edu at least two weeks in advance of when you would like to visit.

Self-Guided Visits

The museum is free and open to the public Monday-Friday from 8:30 to 4:30 and Saturdays from 9-1. If you are coming in a group of 10 or more we ask that you contact us in advance to schedule time to come explore the exhibits.  This allows us to try and avoid groups overlapping in the museum, improving everyone’s experience. Through May, 2022 we are scheduling groups on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays each week. This allows visitors who are hoping to avoid large groups to plan their visit for Mondays, Fridays or Saturdays.

Due to guide shortages, at this time we are only scheduling self-guided visits for elementary-aged groups. We currently have a group size limit of 50 people for our self-guided visits and ask that you have enough chaperones to be able to split into groups of ~10 people.

To focus and enhance your visit, we will have scavenger hunt sheets, self-guided tour booklets, clipboards, and pencils available for students to use.

If you are interested in scheduling a self-guided visit, please email tours@geology.wisc.edu at least two weeks in advance of when you would like to come.
